Wan Roti Canai Beratur @ Datuk Kumbar, Alor Setar, Kedah

I believe this is the only Roti Canai stall in Malaysia that practices self order and self collection service. Yet, Wan Roti Canai Beratur is not a fancy restaurant or located in proper settings but it is located by the roadside. This popular roti canai stall is located at Datuk Kumbar, Alor Setar and is a local favorite. Despite its weird practice, whereby you have to queue for your roti canai (from order to collection), there is still always a queue when the stall starts operate at night.

Wan Roti Canai Beratur has been operating for ages at the present location. Another weird practice is that the stall never sell Roti Canai Kosong.

To order, get into the designated place and tell the boss / chef which you would like to order. Then you have to patiently wait in the queue while waiting him to flip and cook the dough, get a plate and put the roti canai you ordered on your plate after he finished cooking it (he will prepare according to the queue line and tell you when it is done). Take the curry gravy by yourself too, and head to the end of the queue to pay for your food (an iron bar will be released when your order is done). Excessive gravy or take away will be weighed, and every 100gm will be charged for 20 cents.

Do not misunderstand the boss by thinking he is arrogant by practise such a system. In fact, he was very friendly and we had a short conversation before he starts preparing flipping the roti canai dough. There must be a reason he lay out such a system in his stall.

I truly understand why so many people fancy Wan Roti Canai Beratur after tasted it. I had a Roti Canai Masala, which is fluffy and crispy, and tasted like a cookie instead of roti. Then the Roti Canai Pisang is sweet due to the usage of sweet bananas. Anyhow, the winning tip is the savoury curry gravy. It is unique and imparted a very nice flavour to the roti canai, and you will yearn for more and practically drench your roti canai with the curry to enjoy it thoroughly. No wonder they charge 20 cents for excessive curry.

For exotic lovers, they do serve chicken feet curry as well. Some said it is real good but I am not a fan of it so I am not in the position to comment.
