Astaka Taman Tun Sardon at Gelugor is one of the awesome places to enjoy Malay delicacies. This place is particularly crowded in the morning, and concealed within the food court are some of the best and unique Malay dishes we have tried so far. Â We said it is unique because those awesome food are not limited to the usual nasi lemak or char koay teow, but to something more peculiar.. Â In fact, Astaka Taman Tun Sardon is a one stop food court center but packed with a variety of delicacies.
The something peculiar is actually Koay Teow Th'ng (RM 4.50), or Koay Teow Soup. Commonly sold by Chinese, there is a stall named Sri Buana operated by Malay that sells Koay Teow Soup and the stall is exceptionally popular. Of course, you may have the koay teow substituted with yellow noodles or bee hoon.
Sri Buana Koay Teow Soup gained its popularity for some solid reasons. The soup is packed with a very strong and robust flavor, alongside with some chewy meat balls. Unlike the chinese thin koay teow, its thick version provided a much solid mouth-feel sensation.Â
Wahid Roti Canai is another popular choice. By seeing the big wok of the dahl prepared by the stall, you may gauge its business popularity. The roti is great and the gravy is slightly unusual in a good way we felt. It is more creamy but smooth.
Do check out Gerai Fuad Omar for its affordable and delicious homemade Malay kuih-muih too. Each piece cost RM 0.50 - RM 0.70 and it is wallet friendly to pack a few in the car for some snacking later.
Another must try is the Serabai. Unfortunately it was closed during our visit. It is hearsay that Serabai is a very unique food
