Char Koay Teow @ Siam Road, Penang

Penang undeniably offers you the best Char Koay Teow (CKT) that you may not resist. One of it that stood up among the rest would be the Siam Road CKT. Defined as one of the branded CKT along Ah Leng CKT, Lorong Selamat CKT, Ah Heng CKT (BM) and Sister’s CKT, one must not missed it if you are visit Penang and your time is too scarce to enjoy the vast of yummy food here. However, do expect to wait at least up to 30 – 45 minutes before you are served.

I have seen the uncle operating the stall since I was a kid, hence presumably this CKT has a history of more than 20 years. At his age, uncle still very energetic and he got to fry non-stop after the stall starts operating at 3pm. At this technology savvy era, uncle still insisting using charcoal and manual fanning to fry his CTK, hence giving him a better manipulation at the fire and resulted a distinctive wok hei. During frying process, you can see uncle mumbles like casting some spells toward his CKT. Just order to his son as uncle will appear emotionless if you order via him.

The excess amount of lard added to the CKT also gave the koay teow a sense of smoothness and greasy, thus just ignore the terminology “unhealthy” when you are having it. An extraordinary Penang CKT topped with cockles, lap cheong, prawns and ku chai, this plate of CKT will never fail to disappoint your taste buds. Nevertheless, the prawns served were just ordinary. I always request for extra spiciness as I found out this CKT tastes better with that.

You may dine in at the corner coffee shop namely Hock Ban Hin, just across the street. Pricing wise, I would rate this CKT as a commercial price as it is slightly pricey compared to other CKT you may find in the island. However, it is definitely worth it. The portion per plate is just good enough for one person and you may find yourself suffering if you choose to share it with your friends.
