With the rising popularity of Peranakan culture through TV hits like Emerald Hills, traditional Nyonya cuisine is enjoying renewed attention among the younger generation. Once a staple in many homes, these heritage dishes are slowly fading from modern dining tables as busy lifestyles take over. Thankfully, many restaurants bring back those nostalgic flavours, giving families a chance to reconnect with classic recipes and introduce them to the next generation.
Recently opened at Sunshine Central, Yang Yang by Rutin offers a wide selection of Nyonya dishes and oriental delicacies in a comfortable, family-friendly setting.

We had the Ayam Berempah Set, paired with blue pea rice, acar and jiu hu char. The small Nyonya side dishes were a nice touch, while the chicken itself was well-marinated. However, we would wish a little more sambal to complete the experience.
We also tried the White Pepper Pig Tripe Soup. Though a modest portion but its fair considering the price. The flavour was decent, lightly peppery without being overwhelming.

Another dish we ordered was their Signature Milky Soup that reminded me of Rutin's well-loved noodle soup but with a nice twist. Creamy broth with tomatoes, crispy fried fish, bean curd and yam. It came bubbling hot with a small candle underneath to keep it warm throughout the meal. While the presentation was thoughtful, the soup did turn slightly salty towards the end as the broth thickened from continous heating.
For the sweet end, we enjoyed a bowl of comforting dessert - Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Milk. Simple, old-school, and comforting.
