Rumah Makan Sunan Drajat @ Relau, Bayan Lepas, Penang

Indonesian cuisines are probably are the most under appreciated in Penang. There are not many food outlets selling Indonesian food, not to mention the frequenters to the available Indonesian food outlets are mostly Indonesians working here or the Malay community. Having been to Indonesia a few times, we enjoy Indonesian cuisines thoroughly and were delighted to discover Rumah Makan Sunan Drajat at Relau, a no-frills outlet that serves authentic Indonesian food. Some of the ingredients such as pecel are imported from Indonesia even!

Ayam Penyet

Ayam Penyet is one of our favorite among the Indonesian cuisines. The fried chicken whole leg is soft after being smashed with a pestle against the mortar. It is best eaten along with its special sambal, which is made with a mixture of chili, tamarind, lime juice, shallots and garlic. The burning sensation is no joke but we enjoy it.

The portion of Ayam Penyet is served with a piece tempeh, a fermented soy product which is a rare sighting in Penang as well.

If you are a smaller eater, opt for their Ayam Pecel instead. The Pecel (peanut sauce sambal) is imported directly from Indonesia, as the tools needed to make it are unique and nowhere to be found in Penang. As expected, the pecel tasted spicy but enjoyable to the extent we could have the pecel just with plain white rice.

There are other Indonesian cuisine such as Bakso, Soto and Bebek being offered here and we wish to come back again in future for another feast.

Soto ayam, a popular chicken soup in Indonesia which makes us crave for it from time to time. Tumeric flavoured chicken stock with gentle lemongrass aroma, usually came with fried chicken, bean sprouts, egg, fried shallots and vermicelli. It is served with separate plate of rice, where we love to let it soaked in the soup, enjoy the sourly kick from the freshly squeezed lime, and the spicy excitement from sambal.
