October 10th, 2017 marks the historical moment for Penang's Golden Sands Resorts by Shangri-La on creating the largest floating kolam (mural)Â in Malaysia. This initiative has earned them an entry in the Malaysia Book of Record.Â
The kolam measures at 638.02 m2 that floats above 120, 000 gallons of water in the resort's shimmering blue swimming pool.
It took more than 100 volunteers of working for 10 consecutive days to complete the floating kolam. The mural depicts a giant peacock that made of 435 kgs of dried coconut flakes which involved tedious process from extracting until adding colours. Then, 47 pieces Styrofoam of various sizes were combined like a giant jigsaw puzzle, and surrounded by 15 lotus flowers and 5,000 bulbs of fresh flowers.
"This project would not be possible without the support and crucial help by the volunteers from diverse backgrounds in term of time, talent and precision work." said Hotel Manager Noel D'Couto.
He then added:" What better time for Malaysia's largest floating "Kolam" mural in the swimming pool than during the run up to Deepavali? This is a project where culture, art and community meet for a common goal. It also reflects the good relations among the diverse people of Penang and harmony within a multi-cultural society."
Indian classical dance and Tabla performances were performed to celebrate the successful of setting a record in Malaysia Book of Record.
