Chou Yang Teochew Porridge 朝阳粥馆 @ Relau, Penang

Relau township has been blooming recently with the construction of high rinse condos, and generally this has lead to more new eateries as well. Restoran Chou Yang is the latest addition to the the neighbourhood, claiming it sells authentic Vietnamese cuisine but during our visit there the shop is selling Teochew style porridge instead.

Exactly like the usual stall selling economy rice, an array of dishes are displayed at the counter, letting patrons to pick whatever you like. Making choices are easy, we just need to point any dish that we deem mouth-watering, then they will serve it in a small plate as accompaniment to the rice porridge. For those who did not enjoy rice porridge may go for rice instead.

We had a bowl of pickled vegetable, a Pomfret, some tofu and eggs, and the must try braised ducks which cost us in a whopping RM 24. Overall there is nothing much exciting or worthy shout about, as these are usual side dishes that we encounter daily except for the braised duck that possessed tender and well braised meat. The gravy that comes along the braised duck with a balance of saltiness and sweetness best used to spice up the plain porridge as well. In fact, we considered RM 24 for all of the above dishes are slightly on a high side.
