Hokkien Prawn Noodles are ubiquitous in Penang always remained the pride of Penangites. Of thousands of Hokkien Prawn Noodles stalls in Penang, there are a few peculiar ones worth trying. For instance,  this eatery nearby to the entrance of Lorong Selamat - T&T Prawn Mee Shop serves hokkien mee in claypot, though non-claypot version is offered as well.Â
At first, I thought all the hokkien mee is served in a claypot, hence I ordered a bowl of it for RM 4.80 and added pork ribs (RM 2). It turned out to be a standard bowl of hokkien mee, topped with a few pieces of chicken slices, a smatter of little prawns and some vegetables. Eggs were absent to my surprise. Later, it was revealed that eggs have to be ordered as a top-up separately, alongside with few other choices offered such as prawns and pork ribs at a different price.
Out of my curiosity, I asked the boss why roasted pork bellies were not offered as a choice of top-up as this used to be a popular choice. Then he told me roasted pork bellies did not go along with hokkien mee, as the soup will render the roasted pork bellies soft and frail, losing its natural crisp.Â
The soup of here was more of a light type, with the brewing prawn essence could be scented lightly. I was quite pleased with its taste, though it would be better if the soup was served piping hot. Perhaps that is the reason they offer claypot hokkien mee to have a better retain of the heat?
This is the Claypot Hokkien Mee. I did not have this due to limited stomach as I was on a sole food hunt trip. However, judging from its appearance it looked nice with the hot fumes can be seen still.
The eatery prepared paper trash boxes for you to put it store the bones or food residues left. Not many, in fact none of the hawkers we have been to still have this old timers "tools".Â
