Little Hanoi @ Jalan Perak, Penang

Little Hanoi is a new Vietnamese restaurant located at Jalan Perak, located just opposite of Perak Road Market. The restaurant is manned by crews comprising of all Vietnamese, but they speak fluent Chinese hence no worries on food ordering. Little Hanoi offers an extensive menu of Vietnamese origin cuisine, ranging from burgers, vegetables, poultry, noodles, and even desserts. This means choosing a meal here might be a difficult decision, unless knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine is just at the tips of your finger.

We gave a try on their Fresh Spring Rolls (RM 8.00 / 3 pieces). Wrapped with rice papers and filled with vermicelli, slices of lettuces and prawns, it gave a fresh feeling upon consumption. Two types of condiments were provided - Hoisin peanut sauce and chili sauce.

Our preference was the Hoisin peanut sauce. It gives a rather bold taste, with mixture of a slight salty and umami taste. The combination between the strong Hoisin peanut sauce and fresh spring rolls complemented each others well. Three pieces of spring rolls would land you to a semi full stomach.

Puzzling over the vast choices of noodles as the dinner, we went for Hue Style Beef Noodle (RM 10.00). Origin from the Huế city in central Vietnam which the dishes are associated with cooking style of formal royal court, a more thicker vermicelli noodles were being used, akin of laksa noodles.

Simmering of beef bones and beef shanks rendered the soup a rich beefy flavor with a hint of burning sensation, thanks to the chili oil being added. Strong lemongrass taste can be scented, and cilantro presence was detected too. Beef lovers would love it as the chef has thrown in a few big chunks of beef slices. However we were slightly overwhelmed with the strong beef taste towards the finishing of the noodles.

The list of dessert with Vietnamese words on the menu was indeed testing my luck on picking the right choice. As the picture of sữa chua nếp cẩm (RM 5) looked interesting, we ordered that but was a disappointment. It is actually sticky rice topped with yogurt. The disappointment was that sticky rice was clumping in mass and had no taste, and the chemistry with yogurt just did not exist.
