Tong LeK 8 Fried Fish Bee Hoon 同乐炸鱼肉米粉 @ Jalan Macalister, Penang

Updated June 2016: Tong Lek has relocated, check end of the post for latest details.

Occasionally one have to be adventurous when it comes to food hunting. None of my friends have recommended me this shop nor I have heard about it. Just out of nowhere, we drove through pass Jalan Macalister and we marked this shop down on our must try list following our instinct. We then woke up late on a Sunday morning and running out of choice for a breakfast venue, thus we decided to come here for breakfast.

The shop menu is pretty straight forward as the shop name suggests, everything is circled around fried fish and you get to pick different elements to add on, with different types of menu available - koay teow, mee, rice noodles (bee tai bak), maggie mee, bee hoon or noodles.

We then stick to our usual combination for 2 people, one dried and one soup version. Fried fish rice noodles (RM5.00) dried version comes with plentiful of dried onion and pork lards. The rice noodles do not seem to blend well with the soy sauce, plus the soy sauce tasted watery and lacking of the elusive scent that being emitted by various dried noodles such as wantan mee, hokkien char etc. We just quickly finish this bowl of noodles without much indulgence.

White tomyam fried fish head bee hoon (RM 7.00) is okay though. The white tomyam soup asted slightly sour and not too spicy, just nice for a light breakfast. Meatballs are presence, otherwise the whole bowl of tomyam would appear dull then.

Now you may be asking, where is the fried fish as promised on the name of item we have ordered?

The fried fish actually will be served separately. All meal are entitled for 3 pieces of fried fish if the word "fried fish" is mentioned on the menu. With a thin layer of flour coat, the chef did not cheat on the size of the fried fish. As a matter of fact, the fish is quite generous in terms of size and the flesh is vividly tasted. Much to our enjoyment as the fish is deboned as well.

I would have come back next time just to order a bowl of fried fish - item H on the menu. Compared to a nearby shop selling fried fish bee hoon which I feel is ridiculously priced which I definitely will not patronize them again, this shop reserves a credit for maintaining an affordable price. Not all Penangnite are rich then. Out of topic, when would the government seriously enforce the anti profiteering act?
