Hakka Tree @ Gurney Plaza, Penang

Wandering around Gurney Plaza's basement floor wondering what should we get for lunch, Hakka Tree located next to Xuan Xin Ramen Restaurant caught our eye. Flipping through their menu and found them intriguing. The interior decor ia simple and minimalist with tables that enough to cater for groups of 2 to 4 persons only.

Hakka's signature dish, Thunder Tea Rice (RM 10.90), the literal translate of Lei Cha in mandarin. Beautiful presentation of peanuts and vegetables topping the brown rice. Lei Cha's enthusiast would know that the key for a gratifying bowl of Lei Cha wasn't the beautiful condiment of the rice but the mesmerizing green accompanying broth. Their green broth has assimilates into local by reducing the tea leaves and herbs level, thus make it least bitter. The right way is pouring the broth into your rice but we prefer them separate.

Hakkan Noodles with Salted Fish Pork Cakes (RM 11.80) accompanied with tangy minced pork and bean sprouts. The pan fried salted fish pork cakes was the highlight, crispy with a little bit of salty kick.

Fu Chuk Yee Mai (RM 4.90), bean curd was boiled and dissolved into silky smooth soy juice. Scooping from the bottom of the bowl, you will find fine barleys and ginkgo nuts.
