Ah Leng Char Koay Teow @ Dato Keramat, Penang

There will be definitely some arguments when it comes to the best Char Koay Teow (CKT) in Penang. On my perspective, each of the CKT offers a distinct value for everyone to regard it as the best. Ah Leng Char Koay Teow will top my list if we were to talk on the ingredients brimmed into this simple dish.

Look at the picture of the CKT, it is self-explanatory. The premium big prawns served on the CKT would be shocking if you are first timers or never heard of Ah Leng Char Koay Teow before. The quality of the prawn is on the top level – fresh, crunchy, juicy, thick, fragrance, anything you could name it. You could hardly find any other CKT served with this quality of prawn, though the one in Padang Brown comes close to it.

Apart from prawn, what distinguishes Ah Leng Char Koay Teow is that they offer mantis prawn as well. Yes, mantis prawns with CKT. The mantis prawns taste good and compliment the taste of CKT, and rendering it less oily as you get to chew something in between the oily noodles with lard.

I personally find this CKT offers less excitement compared to others famous CKT in Penang as the only worthy mention is their prawns and mantis prawns. The fried koay teow itself is above average with little wok hei, and the blending of eggs and koay teow to provide the smoothness of the koay teow were normal as well. Nevertheless, second attempt on this CKT with the request to the chef to increase level of spiciness actually raise the overall sensation of CKT.

Looking at the prawns or mantis prawns, be prepared for hemorrhage to your wallet as well. Each plate of CKT with duck eggs and either prawn or mantis prawns will cost you RM 7 but trust me, it is worth a try.
